Wireless Repeaters ( or boosters)

The ranges listed for wireless devices are theoretical. There are times when the environment will not allow you to connect.

We had a situation where there were two thick farmhouse walls between the wireless router and the wireless connector for the desktop. This prevented a reliable connection. The client had installed a linksys wireless expander. The original connection was not configured properly. It took some effort to get everything working properly.

Tips

  • The autoconfiguration button on the expander does not support WEP (Wired equivalency protocol). You need to enable WEP or WPA in today’s environment.

  • Adding one expander is pretty straightforward. The problem arises when you try to add a second expander. The default IP address is 192.168.1.240 for the expander. If you add a second expander and do not change the ip address, you will experience a network conflict.

  • The expander will look for the strongest signal it can find. There can be a problem with neighbor’s systems. Suppose you have a WAP (wireless access point) in your basement and you want to put an expander on your second floor. If you are in a densely populated neighborhood, you might find that your neighbor has a unit on their second floor that has a stronger signal than your WAP in the basement.

  • If you are running into a problem with a neighbor’s signal overpowering your signal, you might want to consider adding high gain antennas to your wireless access points. These antennas are not inexpensive though.

  • Check the firmware on your router or wap. The linksys wireless expander requires a certain firmware level.

  • You should change the default password on the expander. If you do so, make sure that you make a note of the password so you can find it when you need to reconfigure the expander. Also, you should note the ip address in case in the future you need to change that.
