Mcafee Internet Security Suite 2006

 
Given some of the problems we're encountering with Norton 2006, we have begun moving some of our systems to Mcafee  Internet Security Suite

The suite consists of anti virus protection, a firewall, privacy protection And a spam killer.  You'll have to remove any traces of Norton prior to installing McAfee.  Once you've done that the installation process should go smoothly unless you have some serious virus issues. 

After installation you will need to set up an account in order to get the latest signatures and updates.  We had to play around a little bit because the windows popup blocker was preventing the downloading of updates.  You'll also need to set a supervisor password.  You can then set the installation of McAfee so that you don't need to enter the password in every time you log on. 

The firewall comes with a fairly decent list of known programs.  However you will have to tweak it for the unique programs on your system. 

The functionality is very similar to that of the Norton suite.  The major difference is in the user interface and in the way that you update the program.  You can set up scheduled scans so that you're in a virus runs when you're not using the machine such as in the middle of the night. 

McAfee has started offering three-pack bundles of their products similar to the way that  Norton is bundled. 

The installation, as with the installation of any security software, take some time.  If you're installing it manually on a single machine expect to spend about an hour before everything is installed, updated, configured and ready to run.
