Icon Developer Free Review
We found that changing the folder icons in Windows XP can help you quickly locate commonly used folders when you have a large folder list. To change a folder icon, you right click on a folder, choose properties, then choose customize. At the bottom of the screen is a button to "change icon". Clicking that button will take you to a default list of icons, usually in windows\system32\shell32.dll. That list is ok for most purposes. However you sometimes want to create an icon that is not in that list. There are some applications that will search through your program files and dlls and compile a list of icons on your machine. You can also go to a site like download.com and download a library of icons. We found Icon Developer Free to be an extremely useful tool. You can find it at download.com or at http://www.stardock.com/products/icondeveloper/ The program is fairly simple. You can click on the pencil icon and your default shell image editor, in our case paint, will open. If you are using paint, be sure to zoom custom to 800%. You can draw the icon you want, then save. You can then save your icon. We created a folder under my documents specifically for icons. Now you can go to the folder you want to change and modify the icon as described above. Summary The free version is great. The pro version is only about $10 and is probably worth the price. If you want the ability to quickly create some distinctive icons, this is an invaluable tool
