Getback Software data recovery for NTFS

A good, reliable backup system may mean that you can recover your data from backups instead of having to attempt data recovery. In some cases though, you might have a situation where you don’t have a backup of critical data and you lose that data.

We needed a data recovery program on short notice for a client’s machine. We evaluated Getback Software’s data recovery program. If you are running XP, you need to run a recovery program that is compatible with NTFS.

To be effective you need to run the application from something other than the hard drive you are trying to recover. You can install the hard drive as a slave in another machine, which can be a little tricky. Another alternative is to do your recovery over a network. You will need to go to Getback's  website to download client software so that the application can communicate with the drive you want to recover over the network. You want to run at 100MBS if possible. Also, the closer you have the two machines the better. In other words try to have the two machines connected to the same switch if possible.

Recovery can take quite a bit of time. The amount of time required will depend on network speed, your processor speeds, the amount of data to be recovered and the hard disk speeds.

Once you run a scan, you might want to save the scan results as an image. That way you might avoid having to run a scan again.

The amount of recoverable data was amazing.

Update - August 2005 - We purchased Getdataback FAT in order to recover information from a Windows 98 SE machine. It worked as well as GetDataBack NTFS which is to say that it was a smooth recovery that got back almost all of the data from the drive.
