BartPE Boot Disk for File RecoveryBart is a lifesaver…!!! And a Genius..!!! We encountered a machine that had somehow blown out it’s C: drive. My guess was that the data was intact. The machine would not boot into safe mode. It would only come up with a black and white CTRL-ALT-DELETE screen. We tried booting into the recovery console and got a disk read error at the C Prompt. Our plan was to run GetDataBackNTFS over the network. In order to do that, we needed to be able to boot the machine with network support. Some of the other boot disk methods available were a little tedious. We found the BartPE site. Bart’s solution is to create a cd with the Windows PreInstall Environment. This will allow you to load a limited number of applications as plugins to the environment. When you are going to set up your CD, take a look at the plugins that you will need. In our case were were fortunate that the folks at GetDataBackNTFS were foresighted enough to create a plugin for their network server host application. You need to include the files in your plugin directory. We were creating this disk at 3 am so there was some trial and error on our part. We created a couple of coasters before we were able to create a CD that would boot the failed machine and provide networking and the Host application. When you run BartPE, you will create an ISO file. The ISO file will be burned to your CD so that it is bootable. The exact process will vary depending on your burning software. Once we had the CD created, we were able to boot the bad machine and connect it to our network.. There are a number of applications including a great file browser called A34 In addition there are some low level tools for working with partitions. Our approach was to do nothing that would change the data on the failed disk (Booting a BartPE CD does not write anything to the Hard Drive). GetDataBackNTFS is designed so that you can run it on a good machine and, using their free host, access the drives on the bad machine. The file manager was able to confirm that our data was probably relatively intact on the drive. We ran GetBackNTFS and were able to retrieve most of the data. The process took about 24 hours to retrieve about 30GB of data.
