Avantgo Review

Avantgo is a great little service that allows you to download data from the internet to your handheld device. It's great for people whose handhelds are not wireless capable.

You go to www.avantgo.com and set up a free account. Most of the services are free. We subscribe to news, weather and computer related channels.

Tips

Be careful with the total download size with regard to available memory on your handheld. Each channel will have options that will allow you to determine how much you will download.

You need to watch how much you are downloading and how often the channels will refresh. It is extremely frustrating when you are late for a meeting and trying to hotsync with everything being refreshed. You can get around this by staggering the update days and times for some of the channels.

You can set up custom channels that will download a URL of your choice. However, the pages don't always render that well on the handheld since they are designed for the web, not Avantgo.

Your handheld should have an option to adjust the font size. This can really help with readability.

Some of our favorites are accuweather, cnet, The New York Times, and Wired. The service is now available for Blackberry owners.

Summary - Overall a great service. It will extend the functionality of your handheld device.
