Spherious Server Monitor Review

Update August 2005:

In 2005, the company moved away from it's freeware version to a paid version. It does not appear to be available on their new site. However, you can still find it on download.com by searching for spherious or network monitor

If you only have a couple of websites to monitor, the Sperious Server Monitor is a great choice. First of all, it's freeware.

You install the software on any of your workstations, preferably one that is up 24x7. Once you have configured the application, it will monitor up to 6 servers on any ports. It will send an email notification if your servers are down.

Our experience:

Tips

  •  Include Spherious in your startup so it starts when your machine starts. You can enable the startup option in the configuration.

  •  Most often, you will want to monitor your http server (port 80). However, we also monitor the mail server for our domain (port 25)

  • The user interface is simple but it is a little tricky. Take some time to play with it.

  • You can simply scroll through the log window to see if and when your server was down.

  • If you are dependant on email notification, make sure that you are using an email from a domain other than the one you are monitoring.

  • If you want to keep a copy of the log, you will have to cut and paste it into notepad.

Summary

(Update) - Spherious has moved from shareware to commercial. We will publish a review of the commercial product shortly. Given the utility of the original product we believe that it is a must have for anyone who depends on their websites
