iolo Search and Recover2

We had a machine in the shop that had experienced a complete hard drive failure. We used Getdataback FAT to do a recovery and found a couple of possibly useful PST files. When we tried to load the recovered files (about 400 meg) we got an error that the files were corrupt.

The main concern of the client was the contact list (which they had not backed up).

We tried a couple of file recovery apps but none of them appeared to recover the contacts list. We tried Search and Recover 2 from iolo. The trial version allows you to do one Outlook recovery. The recovery process is menu driven and extremely easy. After about 15 minutes we had fully recovered all of the data in the PST file including the contacts, calendar, tasks and messages. The contents of the contact folder were in one of the folders labeled ‘lost and found’. We had to then create a new contacts folder (Tagging it as a Contacts Folder for Outlook). When we moved the contacts into this folder they needed a little work. The biggest issue was that the contacts did not have a valid 'file as' set. You had to go through each contact and set the 'file as'. The calendar items were there but all of the dates were set to the current date.

In addition to the email recovery, Search and Recover 2 also provides

  • A File Rescue Wizard - Helps you recover deleted and lost files

  • A Media Recovery Wizard - Similar to the File Rescue Wizard but geared toward other media such as camera cards

  • Advanced Deleted File Search

  • Recover Lost Email - Options for Outlook express, Eudora, Outlook and Netscape Mail

  • Emergency Disk Image

  • File Terminator - This adds itself to your right click and allows secure deletion of files.

The cost to register the program is very reasonable. You can register for $39.95 or less if you purchase multiple licenses.
