Microsoft One Care ReviewSept 2006 Microsoft is offering an antivirus, antispyware firewall called Microsoft One Care. The most striking feature is the price. Currently it is about $50 for a three machine license. The compares very favorably with products such as those from MacAfee or Symantec where you pay well over $100 for a three user license. The One Care website makes it clear that it is not an ideal solution for a company with a large number of computers. The product is fairly easy to install. However you first need to have an MSN account or a Microsoft Passport. The installation was failing after we set up a new MSN account. The problem turned out to be that we had not yet activated that account. Once the MSN account was activated, the installation proceeded easily. One Care's firewall is easier to use and manage than it's competitors. On the other hand, it lacks some of the features found in other applications. IssuesBen Edleman, a well know expert on spyware and malware, does take issue with the fact that One Care Apparently trusts signed software (eg. Thawte) http://www.benedelman.org/ SummaryThis is a great alternative for those who are interested in protecting machines that are not being used in a high risk way. It's also a relief to see a product that is not as bloated as Norton Internet Security 2007. With an ever increasing number of households owning multiple machines it can reduce the costs of protection. For more information, see the One Care website at www.windowsonecare.com. 1 Care also is currently available as a free 90 day trial. |
