Ad Aware Review

Ad aware is a great application for getting rid of scumware. The license is free for personal use and about $40 per license for business use.

After you run Ad-Aware, you might find that some of your applications won't run. Almost always this is because those applications were scumware. You don't want those apps running on your machine anyway.

In addition to Ad Aware, we are running Spybot search and destroy. Also, remember to run a firewall, windows updates and a current anti virus application

Our experience:

  • Ad aware is very easy to install and use.

  • Running Ad Aware is a crucial part of keeping your systems running smoothly

Tips

  • Once in a while you will have to boot into safe mode to get rid of some of the more stubborn scumware

  • Check the Ad Aware website every quarter or so. The last major update required that you reinstall a new copy of  Ad Aware.

  • Make sure that you check for updates every time you run Ad Aware

  • If the results do not have the boxes checked, right-click, then 'select all'.

  • Run Ad-aware for every user on an XP machine.

  • You should run a thorough scan once in a while. Look at the options on the startup page.

  • If you are getting a lot of parasites, you should delete the contents of the older quarantine folders periodically.

  • If you are using an older version of Ad Aware, you should upgrade to the SE version 1.05 (free for home users)

Note - We have had a great deal of success in preventing spyware attacks by setting up a limited user account for web surfing.

Summary

Easy to install and use and very effective in helping your system run at peak efficiency.
Update - August 2005 - Ad aware is now at version 1.06. The newest release has an improved user interface plus an expanded ability to kill spyware.
