Domain names

Domain names are easier than ever to obtain as far as the actual process. However, the availability of names is decreasing rapidly.

To obtain a domain name, simply go to a domain registrar and purchase a domain. The process will probably take about 10 - 20 minutes.

There are thousands of registrars to choose from. Make sure that wherever you register, you own the domain. A couple of places we've used are (your mileage may vary)

When you are choosing a registrar, consider:

  • Do they provide hosting if you need it?
  • Do they provide email accounts?
  • What is the cost?

Tips

  1. Guard your domain names. A domain with a lot of traffic is worth money to spammers.
  2. Make sure that you don't let your domain name lapse. Even for one day. Spammers will grab it.
  3. Most control panels allow you to 'lock' your domain. If you can do that, do it!!!
  4. Beware of scammers trying to get you to register through them. Make sure that you are dealing with your registrar. NEVER give information over the phone.
  5. If you have someone (a web designer) purchase the domain for you, you might want to make sure that you are listed as the administrative and technical contacts. That way, you are sure that you own the domain.
  6. If you drop an email account that is associated with a domain name, you want to change your registration information before you change or drop your email.
  7. If you are really serious about a domain name for a business, check the trademark and servicemark information for your state and the federal level. If you can afford it, consider trademarking your domain name.
