Donating and disposing of old workstations.
Getting rid of older machines has become a lot more complicated. The first issue is that workstations and monitors have a variety of materials that are not exactly environmentally friendly. Simply disposing of these devices in the dumpster hurts the environment and may be illegal. Allowing a disposal company to get rid of the machines also poses some risk. There have been cases of companies receiving a notice from the EPA that their old machines (traced via a serial number) were dumped in an illegal landfill. The companies believed that the disposal company was legitimate but it turned out they were not properly disposing of the assets. If you are disposing of old equipment, make absolutely sure that you are dealing with a reputable disposal firm. Also, some of the vendors are offering an option to ship your old machines back to them for disposal and recycling. There is another issue, especially in view of the rampant identity theft today. Your hard drive is a repository for all sorts of sensitive information. If you allow the information on your machine to fall into the wrong hands, you may either face identity theft and/or litigation for personal information belonging to others that was on your machine. There are some products that promise to destroy all personal information on a machine. We have found that it is difficult to find all of the personal information to destroy it. The other option is to physically remove the hard drive and destroy it. This poses some risk to those challenged by the proper use of a heavy hammer. However, a good whack with a 10 pound sledge hammer should be proof of due diligence in most courts. As far as donations, an increasing number of charities and non profits are refusing to take older machines. They are finding that they just are not worth the effort. When you donate a machine, you will have to be absolutely sure that it is free of any and all sensitive information.
