Surge Suppressors for your NICs.

The value of surge suppressors for NICs (Network Interface Cards)

The value of surge suppression for power for workstations and servers has long been evident. We haven’t seen all that much of a need for surge suppression for Ethernet wiring. However we now believe Ethernet surge suppression to be important..

One of our clients was located in a metal framed building that took a lightning strike. We had not done the wiring for that location. The Cat-5e wiring was run through the metal girders and wire tied to them. The wiring job was neat and professional. After a large storm, their network and one of their machines were down. It turned out that the surge suppression on the power had worked and none of the equipment suffered from power surges through the electrical system. However the surge flowed along the Cat5 knocking out the router, a nic card and administering the coup de gras to an already unstable workstation.

There is a preventive measure available in Cat5 surge suppressors. These devices connect to your NIC and your CAT 5 connects to the device. The device has a ‘tail’ that needs to be connected to the chassis of the machine to establish a ground. You might need to check with an electrician to make sure that your outlets are properly grounded.

The price on these units is about $20 each.
