Hemera is now part of clipart.com. If you had a subscription to Hemera, they converted it to a clipart.com subscription. Clipart.com provides the same type of royalty free license. The yearly cost is a little more, ($169 vs $99) but they have more images and they also have some royalty free fonts.

If you need stock photos, clip art or illustrations, try Hemera. They sell collections on CD but we are currently subscribed to their online service.

The images are royalty free. Be sure to read the licensing agreement for more details.

Costs:

They offer a number of options for online purchases. You can purchase 5 photos, a one month subscription or a one year subscription. We opted for the $99 one year subscription.  They now have a higher level subscription that will give you access to their 15 megabyte images

Our experience:

• For some reason the search button doesn't work for us. We simply hit the enter key

• They seem to be cataloging their entries with a keyword indicating the month that the item was added. e.g. May for may items. Therefore, suppose are looking for fish and you want to see those fish added in June. Search for fish, June.

• Sometimes, you aren't sure of exactly what keywords to use. If you find an image that is close to what you want, click on the image. A list of the keywords for that image will appear. Try clicking on an appropriate keyword.

• We are keeping all of the images we download in a 'hemera' folder. That way, we will know which images came from them.

• If you are creating websites for others, make sure that they understand that they cannot use the images in other materials. Heck, the price is low enough that they can purchase their own subscription.
