Access 4 free

Update - August 2005

Access for free is no longer offering it's free plan.  Some alternatives are Juno, Netzero, a dial up account from aol or your isp or perhaps a cellular card for your laptop. We are using the latter solution for now

Our experience:

Access4Free (http://www.access4free.com) is a great backup to your DSL or Cable or for occasional on-the-road internet access. We looked at Juno and Netzero. Access-4-free seemed to have a plan that best fit our needs.

Under the 'free' plan, you can get 10 hours per month of internet access at no cost. After that it is $1 per hour for the next 10 hours. That means that the most you will pay in any given month is $10. There is also a small signup fee (about $5)

Tips

  •  Sign up before you really need the service, especially if you are using it as an alternate means of connection in case your DSL or Cable Broadband fails.

  • If you are going on the road outside of your normal area, go to their site and save the access numbers.

  • If you are on the road, be careful with the call costs. When we visit Cape May, NJ, none of the Access-4-Free 's phone numbers are a local call. Dialing any of their numbers would result in a cost of over $2 per minute.

  • This may sound odd, but make sure you know your user ID and password before you take a trip.

Summary

A great connectivity backup and something that you should have when traveling.
