We had a unique situation with one of our clients. They are running Windows Small Business Server 2000 and a Citrix Box along with a Watchguard SOHO firewall. Some of the users use RDP to remote in. We wanted to have an audit trail of who logged in remotely. The problem was that neither the Small Business Server nor the Citrix box was logging the IPs of remote connections. The Watchguard Firewall would log it but the logs were transient.

The solution was to install the Kiwi Syslog Daemon. This freeware tool writes a log file showing all of the successful and unsuccessful login attempts. You could purchase additional software that would let you sort through the data easier but we found that you can simply scan through the log looking for entries beginning with IP instead of MONITOR. If someone is repeatedly trying to log in and failing, you will see the entries.

We periodically rotate the logs to keep the file size manageable.

It isn't a totally secure solution because a hacker could find and delete the logs. You need to take some additional steps to guard against that.
