USB Print Servers are becoming increasingly popular. They will allow you to share a usb printer among multiple users on your network.

We installed the PSUS4 on our system with a new HP Laserjet 1012 printer. The IP configuration went smoothly. However, we had some trouble getting the server to recognize the printer. After about an hour of effort, we were able to configure our desktop (Win XP) to see the server and printer. We had no such luck with the HP Laptop also running XP. We called linksys tech support, There was about a 20 minute wait to speak to a tech rep. The tech rep was knowledgeable and walked us through a manual configuration of the printer (Not using the wizard).

We could not get a connection to the printer using the wizard. Without the call to tech support, we would have had a hard time with the configuration.

Tips:

  • The device needs an IP address. In most cases, you will use DHCP or automatic addressing. In some cases, you will need to know a little bit about IP addressing schemes. Depending on the physical security of your location, you might want to note the IP address on the device.

  • Check you compatibility with your printer before purchasing this, or any other print server. This is especially true when you have one of the all-in-one machines.

  • The device is a switch and it does provide 4 ports. You do have to keep in mind ethernet limitations such as the length between nodes and the number of switches on the network.

  • You should change the default password for the device. If you do, make sure that you will be able to remember the password when you need it.

Overall Review - Once we got it configured, it worked great. Since you are not using a workstation to share the printer, you usually make a little more effective use of your bandwidth.
