The trend in printers has moved away from parallel ports for some time now. Currently it is moving away from USB toward network connections.

We had a situation in an office where they needed a new printer for receipts and reports at the reception desk. They printed about a half dozen reams per month.

The 1320N was attractive because of it's cost (about $500), 22 page per minute speed, and a duty cycle of 10,000 pages per month. More importantly, it was networkable right out of the box.

Installation was fairly simple in an SBS 2003/Citrix environment. This particular location only had about 20 users so we manually configured the clients.

Everything worked well except for one minor glitch. This office reboots their Citrix and SBS servers every week. When they did so, the printer would start printing every job that was sent to it during the week. The only way to stop it was to clear all of the print jobs from the server. Upon taking a closer look at the server it was evident that the print jobs were remaining in the print que with a printed status. They were not being deleted. When the server was rebooted, they would all be printed again.

HP phone support came up with a resolution within about 15 minutes. The solution was to configure the printer at the server to uncheck the bidirectional printing box. That appears to have fixed the problem.

Tips

  • Take note of the IP address of the printer. There is a built in webserver that will give you a wealth of information about the printer such as pages printed, problems, network configuration and a lot more.

Summary

This is a great printer for a small office. Setup is a snap.
