We purchased a Flatphoto digital camera from Radioshack. This is the older red model with a fixed lens. It isn’t much larger than a couple of credit cards. We wanted a small camera on the theory that any camera is better than none at all. The camera is extremely compact so it is easy to take just about anywhere.

Keep in mind that you are dealing with a miniature camera with a very small lens. We find that you have to make a deliberate effort to keep the camera still or the picture end up blurred, especially any picture taken without a flash. We work around this by taking several shots. The cycle time is very fast so we just snap, count to three, snap, etc..

The other problem with the small lens is that it is difficult to determine if it is really clean. We clean the lens at our computer, then snap a couple of test shots and download them.

The unit requires it’s own USB adaptor and software. If you are going to travel, we suggest taking a copy of the CD since we had some trouble in the beginning and had to reinstall a couple of times. The internal battery is charged via the USB cable.

We purchased as Secure data card to give us some additional capacity. We haven’t been able to get the SD card to read in our PC. We have to use the USB Cable. The card gives us about 160 pictures at higher resolution and over 600 at low resolution.

The included camera software is easy to use. We did find that you have to exit the software before you try to open the folder containing your downloaded pictures.

We liked the fact that the camera comes with a flash. However the range of the flash is quite limited. It works for close ups of people but anything beyond about 5 feet will be dark.

There are a number of other small cameras available today. You might want to check out

Summary – This is a great camera for capturing the moment. You won’t get anything approaching the quality of other megapixel cameras with a real lens. However, you will get pictures that you might have otherwise missed for lack of a camera.
