HP 1012 LaserJet

Our HP 4L finally tired out after years of valiant service.

We replaced it with an HP 1012. The 1012  is a lot of printer for the money. List price is about $199 although discounts are available. The printer is capable of 15 PPM and the recommended service is about 5000 pages per month.

The input capacity is 150 sheets. That is more than adequate for our needs. It comes with 8MB of memory. Duplex printing is manual.

Connectivity is via a USB 2.0 interface.  The design is nice and compact.

Our only negative with this machine is that it doesn't seem to like being hooked up to a print server. We are using the Linksys PSUS4 4 port switch/usb print server. We are getting an error in setconfig.exe when booting one of our desktops. It appears that the printer toolkit will not work through a USB print server. Perhaps the HP Jetdirect server would work but they are a bit pricier.

We had some problems configuring our laptop which runs XP (the same as the desktop). For some reason we could not get the laptop, printer and print server to communicate. When we called linksys, the techie walked us through a manual configuration for the printer.

Tips

  • If you are going to attach this printer to a USB print server you probably don't want to connect it to your computer directly and install the software. Rather, you might want to connect it to the print server first.
  • If you have this printer on a linksys PSUS4 print server and can't get it to work, call the Linksys help desk. They seem to be aware of the issue and walked us through the setup.
  • If you are hooked up through a print server (other than jetdirect) you won't get printer status and error messages. We had pulled the printer forward and dislodged the power plug. The error message on the PC trying to print seemed to indicate a port or a print server problem.

 Summary

A great printer for the price.
