The HP 6110 All-in-one machine has met our needs. It is a copier, scanner, fax and printer. It will print and copy in color and black and white.

The software installed easily on the machine that directly connects to it. We've had to play around to get our other machines to recognize the shared printer.

Tips:

  • Try the poster feature. It is easy to use. It will allow you to take an 8x10 sheet and blow it up to a poster 4 sheets by 3 sheets in size.

  • Watch your cost per page. We use a laser printer for higher volume jobs.

  • We also use a laser printer because they are a whole lot faster than the office jet.

  • You can hook this up as a network printer. However if you do that, as opposed to sharing it with a USB hookup, you will lose some of the functionality.

  • We don't think refilling the cartridges is worth the effort. You can easily end up looking like an easter egg. (from the spilled ink)

  • You have to watch the size when you are feeding photos through the document feeder. They have to be about 4x6 or larger. 3x5 photos will jam

  • When scanning photos, you will have to clean the glass often, especially if the photos were in any kind of album or attached somewhere with sticky tape.

Some Minor issues

  • The paper tray is a little limited. This is not a device for high volume printing

  • Once in a while we have to play with the paper to get it to feed. It is usually because we didn't pay attention while loading it.

Cleaning the bottom of the glass

After a good bit of service, the underside of the scanning glass got a haze. Dirty glass makes for some poor scans and copies. The trick is to clean the glass and still have a functional machine. The design does not lend itself to easily cleaning the glass.

If you decide to try to clean the glass keep in mind that you could end up breaking the machine. If you are willing to take that risk, here are some tips

  •  Pull the power and usb cable. If you can, you might want to take the machine to a table where you can work on it comfortably.

  • You have to remove the torx screws holding the cover on. These are T-10 size and located all around the glass

  • You can remove the thin strip of glass on the left side. Keep im mind how everything goes together.

  • There is a tab under the thin glass strip. It appears that you have to press this to remove the cover.

  • You need to remove the front control panel. There is a plastic latch in the front that you can depress and then slide the panel to the left. It would help if you had something to rest the panel on so you don't stress the small ribbon cable.

  • Popping the cover off takes a bit of finesse.

  • When you clean the glass, use a good quality cleaner and make sure the bottom is sparkling clean. You don't want to have to repeat this process unless it is necessary.

  • When putting everything back, we found that we had to pay attention to the cable laying in a groove at the rear of the machine. If the cable is not in place, the top will not want to go back on. Don't' force anything.

  • Put the front control panel and side glass back in place.

  • Try the machine to see if it is working ok.

  • Make sure that your hands are clean so you don't smudge the bottom of the glass during reassembly.

Overall Review - A great all in one machine for a small or home office or even a home. It provides a lot of functionality at a reasonable cost.
